Why are Horror games NOT so Horrific?

Author: Ace Weiss

Horror games have always been one of the most popular gaming genres. And over the years, we have seen a plethora of horror games being released into the market. But I personally think that horror games are losing the essence of being actually “horrific”.

And there are a lot of reasons for that, here are some of the reasons why I think that horror games are losing their charm.

Old Techniques

Be it movies, TV shows or games, some of the factors that are used to create the sense of horror are kept common. One of the things that make horror games actually scary is not knowing when something is about to happen. But we have played so many games and watched so many movies that use jump scares between the scenes or create an environment that creeps us out by building up fear using the sense dread.

Now, even though these techniques work, we have gotten used to these over the years and now we can almost predict when something is about to happen by recognizing the common patterns, which makes it a lot less scary or even annoying sometimes.

Same Patterns

Game developers are trying hard to come up with some new patterns that are not so predictable, some of them make use of excessive blood, dismembered limbs to develop fear in our minds, others use jump scares at times when the players least expect them by breaking the common patterns that we are all used to.

Games like Resident Evil series and Alien Isolation have done extremely well but considering the level of immersion that video games can achieve using the advanced technology, I think games do have the potential to make your hearts race out of your chest and make you whimper alone in the corner. But we are yet to see a title that makes us shiver while we hide under the blanket, in a dark spooky room with all the lights turned off.
